ROOTS & INCUBATION

The Beginning of the Company

The history of Planiflex dates back to the 80s of the last century: Manuel Pereira is the manager of Açoflex, the second oldest mattresses Portuguese brand and the father of Fátima Pereira. Under his wing, the daughter learns the trade in the day-to-day business laboring.
In 2001, Fatima Pereira, rather than taking the easy approach and remain under the shadow of her father decides to create her own opportunity with the help of her husband, João Valente.
November 21st, 2001 Planiflex is legally born with its registration. During the following months they carried out the normal steps for the materialization of a business: negotiating with suppliers, purchasing equipment, preparing the first product models, etc.

BIRTH

Initial Apprehension and Jitters

In August 5th, 2002 activity is finally initiated. Fátima Pereira is not only responsible for the whole area of production itself, but also does the commercial work, going door to door.
'I received many no's, but never gave up, never thought about quitting. For me it was a great challenge to create my own business.'
Therefore, her husband, João Valente - by then, splitting his time between the company and his job in the Public Administration - joins her and gradually takes upon himself the sales & trade position.
Initially designed for Murtosa, the factory is installed in the area of Albergaria instead - a facility that spreaded across 450m2 only. Nevertheless, the legal headquarters themselves officially remained in Murtosa. The location of the facility is revolutionary per se, since the traditional areas of mattresses manufacturing in the North of the country are usually Oliveira de Azeméis and S. João da Madeira.
By then, the modest yet professional production, was undertaken by four main machines (and some minor equipment), one of which was budgeted by the then 15 000 000 escudos mark - the rough equivalent to € 75,000, today.

Relocation and First Internationalization

Due to the previously acquired contacts in the field, in 2003 the first abroad contracts are formalized, with the output being sent to Spain and France.
Between 2003 and 2007 the company goes through a period of toil - but due to its unbreakable spirit, the company manages to guarantee a superior product at a competitive price. This causes a new growth, which in turn imposes new adaptative changes throughout the organization.
For starters, May 5, 2007, the company moves to its new premises in the Branca area, in Albergaria-a-Velha (North of Portugal) - region where they have been domiciled since. This new factory is four times larger than the previous, with 1800m2.
In November 2007 João Valente definitely ceases is role in the Public Administration and takes up the management of Planiflex full-time.
Given the growth in demand - the natural outcome of the performance of the previous stage - the company experiences a slight strategic shift: Planiflex acquires new machinery and begins to specifically target the French market, while divesting from Spain.
The good performance of this period starts to reflected in the domestic market as well, and recognition begins to emerge from 2011 on. Since then the brand has been distinguished with the PME Líder (SME Leader) award (namely in 2011, 2012, 2013, 2014, 2015 and now, in 2016). In 2012, in particular, they have been awarded the PME Excelência (SME Excellence) recognition as well.

ACTUALITY

Company in the Present

Reflecting this good work, the company undergoes a third expansion: in April 25, 2013 Planiflex begins moving its operation to the current facilities, spread across 3200m2 - seven-fold larger than the humble beginnings the company started its activity in and almost twice as big as the previous factory. Moreover, a complete refurbishing of the production itself with state-of-the-art equipment was implemented. These improvements were estimated at around one million euros of budgeting.
May 05 production begins at the new factory, and countercyclically the company average annual growth has been around 30% since. It is at this stage that Planiflex adds Morocco and the islands of Guadeloupe, Martinique, French Guiana and La Réunion to its overseas markets as well.
Still under the administration of the founders, the succession has been carefully prepared from the cradle as the family’s new generation is gradually integrated in the business’ organics and the couple’s son and daughter begin to take up responsibilities for the brand.
With at least 14 years of history and an annual output of 80,000 units, this year the company celebrates the de facto entry in the Cuban and Algerian markets - amongst other news that are expected for the nearby future.
All this has only been possible thanks to its pioneering spirit, transparency and dedication policies, begetters of a continuous yet sustained expansion - and its team of 23 employees, the competitive key element of Planiflex’s entire strategy.
